The Base Principles of Workplace Ethics

It has already been established that Workplace Ethics is needed and needs to be established in a company by means of a code of conduct. How do you go about deciding what are the base principles on which they are based? That is the crux of the scheme of getting the Workplace Ethics right.

The very first thing that Workplace Ethics should be based upon are the principles of transparency, integrity and the same yardstick applicable to anyone in the company be they right at the top of the corporate ladder or lower down in the hierarchy.

The Workplace Ethics should consist of the most appropriate and precise information which all employees should be aware of. This will ensure that later on they will not be able to turn around and state non-awareness or go against them. Also, decisions and action plans are such that the employees are extremely clear about what is expected out of them and if they don't adhere to it what will happen to them.

The employees should be involved and engaged in the Workplace Ethics as far as possible. This will get in the right kind of buy in from them and they will be able to stick to it. The more involved they are in the Workplace Ethics; the better will be the follow up and the sticking to it.

The next thing is that Workplace Ethics should be fair, impartial and stick to what it states. The decisions that need to be taken should be based on the fairness of the whole process. This will take into consideration the circumstances, the code of conduct laid down and the way it needs to be interpreted. Also, there can only be one interpretation to it.

The Workplace Ethics should be based on values that are staunchly ingrained and will continue to last for a lifetime. These values and principles should be relevant to the situation and universal. They must not cater to any kind of diversity. This can be brought about if cross functional teams from all the varied departments sit down and chalk out what needs to go in the Workplace Ethics policies. Then these practices need to be managed and implemented in their true spirit in order for the ethics to be actually be seen as behavioral pattern in employees.

Also, the way unethical behavior is addressed needs to be noted down. This too should be done in a sustained manner and consistent manner. The thing one should remember is that Workplace Ethics is more of a habit and behavioral pattern and values and need to be practiced regularly in order to become a part of one.

The key objective that any Workplace Ethics program wants to achieve is that the desired behavior for the employees is achieved in order to create a workplace that has the right code of ethics. These behavioral patterns and practices that are required because of Workplace Ethics need to be just and fair at all times.
